The House that She Built

48 girls from Brownies through Seniors spent a fun afternoon learning about careers in the building and construction industry while earning their House That She Built patch! The girls also worked on several design projects to brighten our meeting space at the Girl Scout House. There are many new items that everyone can use. Some are ready to go and others need some additional painters to finish! If your troop would like to help with some of the projects, please contact Christine.

The projects the girls worked on are:

1. Milk crate stools to use during circle time

2. A roll-up bridge that can be used for bridging ceremonies - either at the Scout House or off-site

3. Painted badge decorations for the storage cabinets

4. Girl-scout themed coat pegs for our new coat closet

5. Shadow boxes to display historic uniforms

6. An easel with a popsicle-stick Kaper Chart on one side and the Girl Scout Promise on the other. Leaders just need to provide the sticks with their girls' names!

Lastly, this event would not have been possible without help from all the chaperones, leaders and older Girl Scouts who helped during the two sessions, and our speakers, Tina Geary from inHabit architecture + design and Troop 723, Denise Richards from Keast & Hood Co. and Troop 71503, and Suzanna Barucco from sbk + partners, LLC. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success!

  • Submit your good news stories!

We're just getting started with a new year, but keep those good news stores coming!

  • Care Packages for Poll Workers

Troop 7669 assembled thank you care packages for poll workers and delivered them to 2 voting sites in Lower Merion. The girls had fun and learned about the importance of safe and fair elections.

  • Neighborhood Cleanup Service Project

Troops 7010 and 07691 (Brownies and Daisies) decided to do a service project based on this year’s “Be a good neighbor” theme. They raked 3 yards in the Penn Wynne neighborhood. They had a great time being helpful to their neighbors!

  • New List Item

Cadette Troop 71104 recently completed their Bronze Award Project with a formal "ribbon cutting" of a Little Lending Library on the campus of Waldron Mercy Academy. Using cookie money, the girls successfully completed multiple steps of the project: coming up with the idea, pitching their idea to the school and the Sisters of Mercy, painting and assembling the library and working with the school to find a place for the library.

Troop 71104 presented their project to a group of well over 400 students, teachers and parents at a Waldron Community Gathering. They will be stewards of the Little Library for the next three years, with the idea of another Girl Scout troop taking over when they graduate in 2027.

  • Scout House Ribbon Cutting

A ribbon cutting & dedication ceremony was held at the Narberth library and Scout House on Friday, September 10th. SU leaders joined Borough Council, PA Senator Cappelletti, PA Representative Daley, Narberth Mayor Deutsch and other guests.

Water Conservation Ideas

Troop 7010 worked on their Wonders of Water journey and wanted to share some of their water conservation ideas with other troops! They went on a field trip to the Fairmount Waterworks and filmed what they learned about water conservation. Check it out!

  • Penn Wynne Planting

On April 25, close to 70 girl scouts across all levels had their 3rd annual Penn Wynne gathering of all the school’s troops (5 troops, all grade levels). They planted flowers all around school and then enjoyed popsicles and a giant Friendship Circle and sang Make New Friends. Excellent work!

  • Riverbend Cleanup Success

The April 6 volunteer outing at Riverbend was a big success, with Mill Creek Girl Scouts clearing gardens for native perennials and planting a large flower bed.

Riverbend was very appreciative of the time and volunteers, and is excited to continue this partnership with our SU!

  • Troop Camping

Seven Cadettes in Troop 726 recently camped at Dingman’s Campground, a 134-site rustic campground located along the Delaware River in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. They hiked to waterfalls, conquered some strong winds during a 3-hour rafting excursion, and spent each night around a campfire sharing stories and singing songs.

  • Winter Survival Camp

Sixth graders from Cadette Troop 71199 survived a foot of snow at Winter Survival Camp in Dingman’s Ferry, PA, last weekend. The camp weekend is run for regional Girl Scout troops by the Pocono Environmental Education Center and featured a night hike through the woods without flashlights, shelter building, orienteering, and fire building, among other fun activities. They highly recommend it to other troops!

  • Troop Service Project

Troop 7503 had an awesome volunteer service day in December where the girls helped out at Cradles to Crayons. The troop’s Daisies and Brownies held a month-long donation drive to gather coats and other items and then spent a morning sorting and packing at the Cradles to Crayons facility.

  • Poker Power!

Mill Creek SU hosted a successful game night featuring Poker Power, LLC, on January 5. More than 75 girls from across GSEP joined the event at Narberth Borough Hall to learn from “dealers” who flew in from as far away as Las Vegas and Chicago to teach girls how the skills used in poker can empower them in the areas of negotiating, discipline, confidence, decision making, and gaining insights by using cues to read people.

  • Public Speaker Badge Field Trip

Cadette Troop 7250 recently tried to “break a leg” by registering for the CSZ Comedy Sports Philly Improv and Public Speaking workshop.

It was a 90-minute session full of lessons and activities that got Cadettes creating stories from nothing, succeeding together as teams, and building confidence while letting loose. “We used the skills of improv comedy to reinforce the techniques of public speaking and earned the Public Speaker badge.”

  • Daisies Help Their Communities

Daisy Troop 7503, led by Drea Tarity, kicked off the new year by learning how they can support the unsheltered through community service projects. Kristen Ostendorf from the Clare Project led the girls through a packing party, resulting in over 50 bags of toiletries to be distributed to adults in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. Amazing work, Scouts!

  • Cadette Fun Field Trip

Cadette Troop 7250, led by Rachel Mennell and Julie Karp, recently toured the Eastern State Penitentiary. (They missed the sign up for Scout Days at the ESP, but report this tour was AMAZING!)

The 60-minute general interest private tour highlighted Eastern State’s 142-year history, revolutionary and influential architecture, and stories of people who lived and worked in the building.

  • Bronze Awardees

Congratulations to the 11 members of Troop 71199, who completed their Bronze Awards in September. Projects revolved around Philadelphia schools, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, after school programming, a cookie booth and recruitment materials for our SU, animal shelters, and a women’s leadership camp in Kenya. Now on to Silver!

  • GSEP Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to Natasha Davis, who was awarded an appreciation pin at last week’s GSEP Volunteer Awards Ceremony, recognizing her exemplary service as Mill Creek’s treasurer.

And, congratulations to all of us! The Mill Creek SU received the CEO Award, in recognition of meeting our membership goals, participating in all GSEP leadership activities, and hosting several SU-wide community service projects.

  • Fall Recruitment Success!

Our SU held a successful recruitment event in September, with the formation of two new Daisy troops and several new Girl Scouts being placed in existing troops. Many thanks to the Cadettes and Senior Scouts who helped with the event and to leaders who welcomed new girls into their troops!

  • Troop Spotlight - Junior Troop 7171

Junior Troop 7171, led by Ana Hagstrand, Kate Trombello, and Meredith Rosner, had a great time beach camping at Beach Jam in Wildwood a couple weeks ago and even won first place in the troop flag contest!

  • Mill Creek High School Seniors Bridge to Adult

In May, 10 Mill Creek Girl Scouts bridged to adult (8 were present at the ceremony). The girls celebrated the end of their time as girls in Girl Scouts with an Eternal Flame Ceremony and ice cream party! Congratulations and good luck, girls!

  • An Amazing Time at the Amazing Race

Over 120 girls and leaders participated in the Amazing Race: Mill Creek Edition at Ridley Creek State Park in late April. The girls heard from speaker and real-live Amazing Racer Emily Bushnell about resiliency, and then competed in their own races, completing challenges such as eating ants, Girl Scout trivia and yoga!

  • Yee-Haw for the Special Someone Dance!

Thank you to Rachel M. and Julie K. for organizing another fabulous night square-dancing to live music with the girls and their special someones! They will take a break next year, but be back in MY25!

  • Oh the Places You'll Go!

Over 40 girls and leaders learned from travel veteran leaders and current Girl Scouts about what goes into a good Troop Trip! Thanks to all who participated! We can’t wait to see where YOU’LL go!

  • 2022 Dickens Festival

Thank you to all the dozens of girls who volunteered for and the five troops that had tables at the Dickens Festival! A jolly time was had by all, and there were no Scrooges to be found! The Narberth Business Association thanks you as well.

  • Painting with a Purpose

We had over 30 creative Girl Scouts help make a mural divider screen for the Girl Scout Room. Thanks to Julianna for organizing and artist Rae Chambers!
